Halloween was a Treat

Darren and I ditched the Halloween Spirit this year and spent it in Hawaii. Grandma & Grandpa Helm watched the kids while we were away. I think it was a rough week for the retired couple who haven't been on a schedule in years. Early morning seminary, making lunches, carpooling, a busy little preschooler, a teething toddler, plus practices and of course being a supportive cheerleader in the stands at games. On top of this everyday life was... carving pumpkins, ward trunk or treat party, Halloween night~ trick or treating. Thanks to wonderful grandparents who made our Hawaii trip possible. I never worried about the kids, I knew they were in good hands.

Cody and Caleb stayed busy and I heard they had fun. I know they dressed up for the holiday and collected candy, because I keep finding their candy wrappers everywhere! Unfortunately I don't have any photos to share. However, here is a photo of my little vacation paradise. I loved waking up to this everyday! I had a blast in Hawaii. Unfortunately, Darren on the other hand was miserable. Our second day there in paradise we went snorkeling and somehow when he went into the water he felt total pain flare up in his back. He hasn't been able to lay flat in bed for over two weeks now. He would cat nap sitting up in a chair in our hotel room. I've never seen this guy so miserable! Myself on the other hand took over that awesome comfy king bed all to myself the entire week. To make a long story short after two weeks of pain and unable to sleep laying down, Darren learned yesterday that he has a herniated disc. Even with the pain and lack of sleep, Darren was a trooper and we enjoyed our vacation.

The girls are cute as always. I like Abby's pumpkin. She is getting so grown-up.

Your blog background is cute, looks like you worked out all the bugs. You guys will definitely have to go back to Hawaii so Darren can enjoy it. And if you need company, we'd love to go back :)

What do you do for a herniated disk? That sounds painful, poor Darren.

Julie-
I'm so jealous of your trip to Hawaii! One of my dream places to go. Tell Darren not to full around with his back issues. I've had two back surgeries, and your never the same after wards! So if he can get it feeling better with PT and exercises at home - try and go that route. Another thing that has always helped me with the pain, is a machine called a Tens Unit. He could get a script from his PC doc for it. It is a machine that has electrodes (sounds yucky - but this really does help and eliminates having to be on pain meds for so long!) and it sends out small current stimulants and they reach the brain before pain does in most cases. The company is EMPI - if you want to check it out. Let me know if you want more info. My insurance paid for everything and continues to do so anytime I have flare up's. Back pain is NOT fun, so I sympathize with him. I'm glad you both were able to enjoy your time away at least!
Love ya!
Kendra
p.s. - the girls were so cute! Please tell your mom hi from me.
